by Michael SuttonA deluge of critical hype -- and a cool name -- couldn't convince music fans that the Jack Rubies were doing anything original. Formed in London, England, in 1987, the Jack Rubies consisted of vocalist Ian Wright, guitarist Stephen D. Ineson, bassist Steve Brockway, and percussionist Lawrence Giltnane. Wright and Ineson were also the group's songwriters. Not in synch with the dance flavors of late-'80s British rock, the Jack Rubies produced derivative jangle pop with biting lyrics that hooked U.S. college radio. The haywire drums and sinister vocals of "Be With You" immediately landed on left-of-the-dial stations in 1988; the video for it also became a favorite of MTV's 120 Minutes. The band also released their debut album, Fascinatin' Vacation, that year. The group toured with They Might Be Giants and Modern English, and their second LP, See the Money in My Smile, appeared in 1990. In the mid-'90s, Ineson left the band to start the Milagro Saints in New York City with Joyce Bowden (clarinet, percussion, vocals, lap steel guitar) and Lee Kirby (piano, organ, harmonica), eventually relocating to Raleigh, NC. The Jack Rubies then switched their appellation to the Screaming Windsors, replacing Giltnane with Martin Owens of Speedball Baby.
