by Richie UnterbergerFaubert made his first impression on the indie scene as the lead singer of the Cheepskates, who made more than half a dozen albums for American and German labels in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Cheepskates' records owed a lot to styles of the 1960s, particularly garage rock and British Invasion pop, played in a revivalist mode. As a solo, singer and multi-instrumentalist Faubert branched out into a more diverse and subtle indie pop trail, capably essaying folk-rock, baroque pop, and power pop variations. His songwriting tends to emphasize tender and fragile emotions, complemented well by his high and unaffected vocals. As of 1999 he had three solo albums, all released by the German Music Maniac label, although Faubert is American and lives in the New York metropolitan area.
