With her passion for music and the interest in her soprano voice, Sertab Erener’s difference stood out during her undergraduate years in Istanbul State Conservatory. In the beginning of 1990’s, she shared the same stage with Sezen Aksu along with many famous artists. In 1992 with Sezen Aksu’s support, she released her first album ‘Sakin Ol’. With the album’s circulation topping 1 million, it also became Turkey’s best selling and best rising album. Sertab Erener’s second work ‘Lal’ was published in 1994. The albums ‘Sertab Gibi’ in 1999 and ‘Turuncu’ followed in 2001, produced by Demir Demirkan.

In her unique music career in Turkey, Sertab Erener sold nearly 5 million albums and won countless awards. Through her musical capability of versatility from Opera to Pop and remarkable stage performance, she worked with famous artists like Jose Carreras and Ricky Martin. As the best selling female pop artist in Turkey, Sertab Erener’s following goal was to get a start in Europe and the first step was taken with the release of the single called ‘Private Emotion’ that she recorded with Ricky Martin. This duet took place in Turkey and Middle East editions of Latin American singer’s album released in 1999.

After a short period, one of the primary records ‘Lal’ took place as the only Turkish song in the Sony Music ‘Soundtrack for a century’ compilation set that consisted of more than 500 songs. Her first European album that carried her name was released in February 2000. The album was introduced to the European media with a magnificent show in Brussels. Sertab performed at many concerts and important festivals and her album was appreciated in the Benelux countries.

In May 24, 2003 she managed to take the first place at the Eurovision contest in Riga, The capital of Letonia with the song called ‘Everyway that I can’ which the lyrics and the music belonged to Demir Demirkan along with the most pretentious performance in the Eurovision history. Through this success, the artist took attention across Europe. In the 50th anniversary celebrations that took place in Denmark in 2005, the song ’Everyway that I can’ became the 9th from the 1000 songs which competed for 50 years.

'Everyway that I can' was the number one song in the European music market sales list for weeks in the summer of 2003 and it reached to top ten in Germany, Switzerland and to top 5 in Belgium and Holland. It managed to stay as the number one song for 4 weeks in Sweden and Greece. Due to the high sale figures, Sertab Erener received a Platinum Record Award in Greece. 'Everyway that I can' became the hit song in Israel, Czech Republic and Poland, it also managed to enter the lists from the top 75’s in England.

After the Eurovision success, in 2004 the first English album ‘No Boundaries’ was released and it took place in the music markets of many European countries like Germany, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Greece, England, Poland and Czech Republic. The album consisted of many international lyricists, composers and producers like Demir Demirkan, Anggun, Gilles Luka from the Galleon Group, Philippe Laurent and Peter Kvint.

In the same period, Sertab Erener’s interpretation of Bob Dylon’s song ‘One More Cup of Coffee’ took place in the soundtrack album of the Hollywood production movie called ‘Masked and Anonymous’ with leading artists Penelope Cruz, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, and Jeff Bridges.

‘No Boundaries’ was released in 2004 in Japan and won great appreciation from the Japanese listeners. The hit song of the album, ‘Here I Am’ was used as the presentation song of the Japanese- Korean production movie called “A Tale of Two Sisters” and took place in the soundtrack album. Sertab Erener was greeted with interest by the Japanese media when she visited Japan for the album presentation and the premier of the movie.

Along with the success of Eurovision, Sertab Erener’s name was heard across Europe and in Far East; in 2005 she released her Turkish album called ‘Ask Olmez’.

In June 2005, she interpreted the song ‘Music’ by Madonna and took place in the soundtrack of Fatih Akın’s documentary crossing the Bridge – Sound of Istanbul that was shown in many foreign countries. In May 2007, the album called ‘Sertab goes to the Club – with Murat Uncuoğlu & Aytekin Kurt’ was released. In this album, Murat Uncuoğlu and Aytekin Kurt who are the leading composers of electronic music and refound life, composed the most favorite Sertab Erener songs with a modern style by an electronic sound.

In the summer of 2007, she interpreted the English single called ‘I Remember Now’ that was composed and produced by Demir Demirkan for the social responsibility project DRUM (Dialogue, Respect, and Understanding through Music) which aims tolerance and respect along different cultures. In October 2007, she also met her fans in America in one of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, New York Carnegie Hall and Los Angeles Kodak Theatre where the Oscar Awards took place through the concerts she performed along with Fahir Atakoglu.

In September 2007, Sertab Erener celebrated the 15th anniversary of her career in Harbiye Açık Hava Tiyatrosu by a magnificent concert ‘Autobiography’ with guest artists such as Sezen Aksu, Levent Yüksel, Demir Demirkan, Fahir Atakoğlu, and Nil Karaibrahimgil. This concert was released on DVD in December 2008. This DVD containing the performance that Sertab Erener only performed once by the name of ‘Autobiography’ and the special interviews made with close friends of her, seems to become the most valuable asset for the fans’ archives. The ‘Autobiography’ DVD consists of three parts named ‘Between life and Death’, ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Love’ that are compatible with the format of the concert. ‘Autobiography’ is also the first High Definition and 5.1 Surround Sound DVD released in Turkey. The fans of Sertab Erener show great interest in the DVD named ‘Autobiography’, which is a magnificent work that crowns the singer’s musical career exceeding fifteen years.

Sertab Erener and Demir Demirkan, who have managed to carry our music to international extents by taking the first place in Eurovision, crowned their musical works for ten years, with the brand new project named ‘Painted on Water’ which is a painting style called ‘Ebru’. This project, produced by Demir Demirkan, was recorded along with some of the most prestigious artists in the world such as the Grammy Award winner producers Jay Newland ve Mike Stern, Al di Meola, Dave Weckl, Trilok Gurtu, Alan Pasqua, Kai Eckhardt and Sabri Tulug Tırpan. The album was recorded in one of the best studios in the world in Los Angeles and New York, which are Henson and Montana. The project that was prepared by the theme of “Ebru” are the Turkish folk songs that are carried to an international form. The “Painted on Water” CD containing the folk melodies from different Anatolian districts that are restructured with modern melodies, translated to English, and displayed as a stage performance in many elite countries of the world was released in June 2009.

Artist’s single called “Bu Böyle” was released on the 12th of June, 2009. After this single, Sertab did a summer-tour throughout Turkey, which was named “Shop & Miles Sertab Erener Summer Concerts”

Her single “Açık Adres” was released on December 2009.

In 2010 Painted on Water released a single called “LOVE”. After that single, Painted On Water performed 3 concerts in U.S.A. and was the guest in many TV Shows under the name of “Painted on Water PR Tour”.

The artist’s new record “Rengarenk” was released on 7th of June 2010. The first music video of the album was shot for “Koparılan Çiçekler”. She performed her debut live performance of the album at the Kuruçeşme Arena on the 30th of June with a spectacular open air concert. In 3 months, the album had a great success and reached 150.000 in digital sales.

The second music video of the album was shot for “Rengarenk” which also is the name of the album. With the release of this song she extended her fan-base to a larger group including the kids. The song reached number one in digital sales and became the most listened song of 2010.

The 3rd music video of the album was shot for “Bir Damla Gözlerimde”. This song’s lyrics were written by the singer of the band Pinhani, Sinan Kaynakci. The song reached number one on the Turkish music charts instantly.

Besides continuing her solo career in Turkey, the artist performed concerts in Europe, including the cities; Cologne, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Paris and Wien with Painted on Water.

The 4th music video of the album was shot for the song “İstanbul”. The video contributed the promotion of İstanbul by including its historical towns and different cultures that the city harbors.

The last music video work of the album “Rengarenk” is the song “Bir Çaresi Bulunur”, lyrics belonging to Sertab Erener and melody belonging to Sertab Erener and Demir Demirkan. Dear actor Cüneyt Turel accompanied her in the video.

The artist, apart from her pop career, shared her album “Türk Sanat Müziği” , which contains the song “Ey suh-i Sertab” which caused her to be called “Sertab”, with the music lovers on 12th of April 2012. “Ey Suh-i Sertab” ,which the artist had released as a present album for her father without being in a commercial concern, took its place on the shelves as the second most seller album of 2012.

The first live performance of the album met the audience in Ulker Arena on 14th of July 2012 and won great recognition. Right after this, “Ey Suh-i Sertab” concert met the television viewers all around Turkey with the shows broadcasted on Star TV and NTV on August 2012.

Sertab Erener shared with her fans the song “Dim Dim” taking place in Ocan Çolakoğlu’s “01” album, lyrics belonging to one of the members of the group “Model”, Can Temiz, and melody belonging to Demir Demirkan and Sertab Erener. The video of the song was shot with a crowded crew in Mardin and Dara.

The artist, has filmed the first clip ‘İyileşiyorum’ from the album planned to come out in April 2013.

Sertab Erener (born 4 December 1964 in Istanbul) is a Turkish pop music singer and also a cross-over soprano with a vocal range that extends to high F. She is one of the most successful female Turkish pop singers in her homeland, and is considered one of the divas of Turkish pop music. In Europe, she is best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 with her hit song "Every Way That I Can", although she has had many other achievements outside Turkey.

Career

A native of Istanbul, Erener studied history of music in a university in the city before beginning her musical career working with Turkish music icon Sezen Aksu.

She released her first album, Sakin Ol, in 1992, and followed it with four more Turkish-language albums over the next decade. Her album Lâ'l was included by Sony Music in its "Soundtrack for a Century" collection.

After competing unsuccessfully in two national Eurovision Song Contest finals in 1989 and 1990, she was internally selected in 2003 and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, representing Turkey with the song "Every Way That I Can", co-written by Demir Demirkan. The song went on to top charts in countries all over Europe, including Sweden and Greece.

In the wake of her Eurovision success, Erener released her first English-language album, No Boundaries, in 2004. Her renditions of "Here I Am" and Bob Dylan's "One More Cup of Coffee" were used in international movie soundtracks. "One More Cup of Coffee" was used in the soundtrack to Masked and Anonymous a semi-biopic of Bob Dylan.

In 2005, Erener released a Turkish-language album named Aşk Ölmez, promoted with songs such as "Aşk Ölmez, Biz Ölürüz" ("Love Doesn't Die, We Do") and "Satılık Kalpler Şehri" ("City of Hearts For Sale"). She also appeared on the movie soundtrack album of Fatih Akın's Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul, with a lauded rendition of Madonna's song "Music".

On 22 October 2005, Erener appeared on Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest, a competition to choose the best Eurovision song of all time, performing the final verse and chorus of "Every Way That I Can". The song finished ninth in a field of fifteen. At the same event, Erener revealed she was to release another English language album.

In 2009, Sertab Erener and Demir Demirkan created a band called Painted on Water and they released a self-titled album in the United States on the Motéma Music label.

Sertab Erener The first ever Turkish winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, Sertab Erener was born in Istanbul on December 4, 1964, and worked alongside singer Sezen Aksu before launching her own career in the late '80s. She made her first appearance in the Turkish national Eurovision Song Contest qualifying competition in 1989, and again in 1990, before releasing her debut album in 1992, Sakin Ol (Calm Down).
