by Mario Mesquita BorgesUncovering distinguished compositions of post-punk enlightened by furious experimental melodies and by frenzied musical and lyrical options, Get Hustle reveals distinct and impressive visions within the darkest dominions of goth rock. Get Hustle's origins go back to 1995 in San Diego, when Mac Mann (piano, keyboards) and drummer Ron Avila, both previous members of Antioch Arrow decided to assemble their own crew. After moving to Los Angeles, the duo recruited the works of Dave Stone (guitar) and vocalist Valentine. Following two years randomly playing across the L.A. club scene, Hustle issued their first disc in 1997, the single I've Got a Gun I'm a Excited, with contributing bass works from Mackie Osborne, wife of Buzz Osborne of the Melvins. Still in 1997, the Californians offered their second disc, the EP Now We're All Gone, by that time featuring bassist Andy Ward, also formerly a member of Antioch Arrow. Three years later via the 5RC Records label, the band delivered Earth Odyssey, their first full-length disc assembling the works of their two earlier recordings. It was then that guitarist Stone decided to part ways with the band, shortly before Hustle moved to Portland, OR. During the following months, while Avila regularly played with an outfit named Holy Molar, featuring members of the Locust and Charles Bronson, Get Hustle continued to play, by then preparing to reissue some of their first recordings.
