by Craig HarrisWith the gutsy lead vocals of Brother Resistance (born Lutalo Masimba) set to the poly-rhythms of hand drums and steel drums, Brother Resistance & the Network Riddim Band has brought a new excitement to the music of Trinidad and Tobago. Their lengthy list of soca hits includes "Ring the Bell" and "Mother Earth." A native of the East Dry River area of Port au Spain, Brother Resistance worked a series of menial jobs after graduating from high school. He continued to be drawn to music, however, and assumed leadership of the Network Riddim Band by 1970. Although he enrolled at the University of the West Indies, and earned a bachelor's degree with honors in economics and history, he continued to chant and write his own songs, switching to electric music by the mid-'70s. Following the release of their debut album, Busting Out, in 1981, Brother Resistance & the Network Riddim Band returned to Trinidad and Tobago at the request of Prime Minister Dr. Eric Williams.
