小简介

四人爱尔兰乐队

Óige (pronounced "oy-ga") were a four piece band from a small town called Dungiven in County Derry, in the north of Ireland. They were founded in 1991 by the youngest member Murrough O'Kane, who was just thirteen years old at the time. Murrough, his older brother Ruadhrai and Cara Dillon all attended the same school, Saint Patrick's High School (now Saint Patrick's College) in Dungiven when the band was founded, and Paul McLaughlin originally came from the neighbouring town of Limavady.

"Óige" means "youth" in Irish as Cara, Ruadhrai and Murrough were in their teens when the band was founded (Cara was 15, Ruadhrai was 14, Murrough was 13, and Paul was just marginally older than the other band members). Ruadhrai and Cara attended fiddle classes together, while Cara and Murrough attended flute and whistle classes together, and Cara was even at these very early stages an amazing singer already the all-Ireland champion, following in her sister Mary's footsteps, as well as a talented multi-instrumentalist, playing fiddle, tin whistle, flute and bodhrán. (Ruadhrai and Murrough are both sons of the bodhrán player and maker Seamus O'Kane.) Paul came from the neighbouring town of Limavady, before moving to Dungiven. Paul had heavy influences in blues guitar playing, which added a vibrant new sound to the band and had began playing with the band using DADGAD tuning at this time, which was pioneering in traditional Irish music when the band Óige were founded, but has now come to be a popular choice for guitarists.

Hermann Glaser-Baur, played a huge role in the formation of the band. Hermann had originally come from Aschaffenburg, near Frankfurt in Germany to settle with his family in Ireland and open a hostel outside Dungiven. Hermann had worked as a music promoter in Germany with bands such as The Sands family and individually with Tommy Sands and Colm Sands, Seamus Tansey, but to name a few. Hermann's role was integral in the foundation and initial management of the band, working as manager, promoter, driver and sound engineer. Hermann organised many gigs for the band at home in Ireland, with their initial concert in Murphy's Bar in Dungiven, then a Pan Celtic festival in Fortwilliam Scotland called "Lochaber Live", before touring Germany for two months, as well as playing regularly in Belfast, all this in the first year of the band's existence.

Once established, the band continued to play regularly around Belfast in places such as the Rotterdam Bar, The Duke of York, The Warehouse and the Chicago Pizza Pie factory, while most of the members were still at school. They constantly toured Scotland and England and occasionally Wales under the organisation of John Morgan from Carrick Music Agency, based in Perthshire in Scotland. It wasn't long before organisers of major festivals in Europe and beyond were looking to get in contact with Óige to perform at their festivals. Some of these festivals included: Gothenburg Irish Music Festival in Sweden, Jacob's Ladder Festival, the Sea of Galilee in Israel, Skagen Festival in Denmark, Dranouter Festival in Belgium, Cambridge Festival in England, Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Stonehaven Festival in Scotland, Gosport Festival in England, 'Folkest' festivals in both Rome and Milan in Italy and Tromso in Norway. In all (to date) the band have toured: Germany, Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Sweden, Israel, The Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Norway.

At the time and before the band Óige were founded, their home town of Dungiven was a thriving town for Irish traditional music, with probably some of the best sessions in all of the country being held in Murphy's bar every Thursday night religiously, with musicians of very high prestige, such as: Cathal Hayden, Brian McGrath, Gino Lupari, Brian and Mark Lavery, Maureen Mc Crystal, the Boylans, the O'Loughlins, the Mc Shanes, visiting musicians such as Shane Mitchell, Liam Kelly, Michael Holmes, Hugh Gallagher and Marcas Ó Murchú attending occasionally, and of course the local musicians of Dungiven such as Packy Kealey, Willie-James McElhinney, Seamus O'Kane, Mary Dillon, Dinny Mc Henry, Liam Mullan, Teresa Kealey, all of whom were a great inspiration to the band and their progression as musicians. Like Four Men and a Dog, Óige performed their debut gig here in Murphy's bar in Dungiven.

In 1995, Cara Dillon amicably left the band to pursue a career in the music industry. During this time Cara got many offers to join other bands, not least De Dannan, and worked with the likes of Phil Coulter. Cara then joined a band called the Equation for a while, before going solo with a recording deal with Rough Trade Records, accompanied by her then boyfriend and now husband Sam Lakeman. When Cara left Óige in 1995, Maranna McCloskey also from Dungiven joined Óige. Maranna again is another great singer and Maranna's style of singing has often been compared to Dolores Keane.
