by Steven McDonaldGlenn Ohrlin is a veteran of the cattle industry and has worked the rodeo circuit, both while being an acquisitive performer — enough so that he eventually put his knowledge about Western folk songs into a book, The Hell Bound Train, for the University of Illinois Press. His particular approach to performance of Western music relies on simplicity — voice and guitar, with the additional of a fiddler on some tunes and, once in a while, a second guitarist. This approach can be heard on his Rounder set, A Cowboys Life, which includes, amongst a variety of cowboy songs, a version of Barnacle Bill the Sailor and a sad version of My Bonny Black Bess. Ohrlin has a rough and ready sound to his performances that is quite charming.
