by Leon JacksonLed by attention-shunning John Chibadura, the Tembo Brothers have become one of the most popular young bands in Zimbabwe, playing the mbira-rhumba fusion known as rumbira. The band formed in 1985 and immediately drew attention on account of Chibaduras intense voice and achingly poignant lyrics. Although the rumbira beat is fast and furious, Chibaduras songs often tell of downbeat misery: broken families, excessive dowries, wasted opportunities. The sorrowfulness of the lyrics notwithstanding, the Tembo Brothers enjoy a massive following among the young in Zimbabwe, where songs like 5,000 Dollars and Nhamo Yatakawona are teen anthems.
