by Bruce EderThe Warm Sounds were a harmony duo of Barry Husband (aka Barry Younghusband) (guitar, bass, vocals), formerly of Tuesdays Children, and Denver Gerrard (guitar, vocals), who got together just in time to greet the Summer of Love with a psychedelic-pop classic called Birds & Bees, released on English Deccas quasi-progressive Deram Records imprint. The song made number 27 on the national chart in England and hit number one on Radio London, the definitive pirate radio outlet for the U.K. but proved to be the last success had by the Warm Sounds. A follow-up Deram single, Nite Is A Comin, failed to chart, and a move over to Immediate Records yielded one single, Sticks And Stones b/w Angeline, that was also ignored by most of the public. Their sound was similar in nature to the Twice As Much, although the Warm Sounds didnt cover songs written by the Rolling Stones. Toward the end of their time together, the duo was experimenting with backward tapes and heavily overdubbed psychedelic effects. After the group dissolved, Husband and Candy John Carr — the drummer who occasionally worked with the Warm Sounds — became members of Hapshash and the Coloured Coat and subsequently joined Donovans band Open Road. Carr was also in the line-up of the group Juniors Eyes, while Denver Gerrard (working as Denny Gerrard) cut a solo album, Sinister Morning, for Deccas mid-priced Nova label.
