by Mike DaRoncoOriginally formed as a garage rock duo known as Hot Licks, Bobby (drums) and Larry (guitar/vocals) eventually acquired Billy (bass) to complete the line up of The Hefners in 1996. Combining an influence of Billy Childish, Link Wray and old Motown, the band adopted the last name of their playboy idol and set the tone of vintage garage to their hometown of Lawrence, Kansas. Middle Class Pig Records first packaged The Hefners sound on a split 10 EP with Germanys Schwarz in 1998. With temporary organist Stevie Hefner assisting in the recording of the 1998 seven-inch Hefner Style, Bryce Hefner eventually fulfilled the keyboard position in time for The Hefners first full-length Lay Off, This Is The Old Mans Private Poison the following year.
