1. Alright, this will be difficult In several sentences, can you just break down the last 15+ years of your life, what countries have you visited, what grimmey dance floors in which cities have you mashed up, how have you fed yourself along the way.

1. 好,很难用几句话讲清楚,但是你可以把你过去15年的人生阅历刨析一下,去过哪些城市?在哪些酷炫的舞池放过音乐?一路是怎么走过来的?

Wow, 15 Years ago, Fuck. That puts me at 19 years old, with a head full of phat dreads and a brain full of acid. I guess I was in university for a bit out in Ottawa and Montreal, with a full course load of herb, techno, and hip hop.

Wow, 15 年前, Fuck. 那时我才19岁,梳着脏辫,迷幻剂充斥着我的脑袋。我在离渥太华和蒙特利尔附近念大学,我在大学里天天学的是“药草”,techno和hiphop。

I left school about a year later and headed to Japan to teach English. In Japan my apartment burned down, and needless to say I got evicted (but no criminal charge). That led me to living with two Japanese maniacs who owned a club in Enoshima, which is like the biggest surfing town outside of Tokyo. On a side note, my new roommates/club owners were also amateur porn producers, so you can imagine how much fun that resulted in. So once I moved to beach with those dudes, that was pretty much it for teaching. I was working full time in their club which was playing some of Japan's biggest reggae sounds (like Mighty Crown), that's also when I rediscovered reggae. Some of you may not know this, but Yokohama and Shonan Japan boasts the second biggest reggae scene outside of Kingston Jamaica, and their record stores are probably the deepest in the world. So that was pretty much Japan, a drunken orgy, with tons of reggae, surfing, and deejaying in some of Tokyo and Yokohama's dopest clubs. Big Up Japan!

我只念了一年,然后就去了日本教英语。在日本,我的公寓着火,不用说肯定被房东给轰了出来(但是幸好没有控诉)。结果我就和两个日本疯子住在一起,他们两在东京之外最大的冲浪城市江之岛开了一家club。还要说下,我的新室友/club老板以前是业余的色情片制作人,所以你想一下就知道有多好玩了。我和这两个日本人搬到一起住之后,就结束了教书的日子。后来我去了他们的club做了全职,放一些日本最有名大雷鬼音乐(像是Mighty Crown的歌),那时候我又重新燃起来对雷鬼音乐的热情。你们可能有的不知道,横滨和湘南这两个城市是除了牙买加金斯顿以外最具有雷鬼氛围的两个城市,他们的唱片商店卖的可能是世界上最深层的音乐。所以在日本的日子就差不多是这样,一个醉鬼的狂欢,无休止的雷鬼,冲浪,在东京和横滨最酷的club里做DJ。超级爱日本!

Once Japan released I didn't have a proper work permit, they kicked me out. I actually had to wait full year before I was allowed to return. That sucked, I loved Japan, I had to leave my girlfriend(s), my residencies, and a ton of records behind. So I went back to university in a feigned attempt to finish my degree. But not before stopping in Thailand for my first time, where my Japanese travel buddy got kidnapped. That ended up real weird, but after "making out" with a couple of ladyboys, everything ended up ok, well mostly. I also made some sick deejay connection Thailand.

然后我被发现没有合法的工作许可证,他们就把我赶出日本了。而且我要再等一年,才能回到日本。实在太糟透了,我爱日本,但我不得不离开我的女朋友(们),我的公寓,还要无数的唱片。所以我回到了大学,假装我想念完我的学位。直到我第一次去了泰国,我的日本驴友被绑架了。结局真的很怪异,我得和两个人妖 ”亲热“,事情基本上算是摆平了。也结下了一些dj的人脉。

Back in Canada, I lasted about 4 months in university before heading to Rio De Janeiro. One of my best friends was down there killing it, and getting deep into Baile Funk. I think that was my start into grimey global sounds. In Rio, life was all about mountains of “snow”, ass, and very real music, I was like 22, a wicked age to be killing it in Brazil. We had a friend down there, Pachu, who remains the most renowned Deejay in Rio. If you've played in Rio De Janeiro, you know Pachu. In fact when Luce brought down the Tropikillaz from Sao Paulo, our bonding point was Pachu over in Rio. He put me in the best club in the city at the time, Bunker 94. I believe it's since closed, but it was right in Arpoador, two minutes from Copacabana and 2 minutes from Ipanema. We also lived on the same street, so again, it was all about "expanding our consciousness", orgies, and music. The Baile Funk scene was just beginning back then, and it was a year before Diplo put out his first mixtape Favela on Blast. It was sick to be round for that scene, and those sand pits in Rocinha were jumping. A very real scene, the kinda spot, where if don't step correct, someone jacks you for your shoes. But it also put me in contact with some of Brazil's dopest producers who I'm still grabbing music off of today.

我又回到了加拿大,呆了四个月,又去了里约热内卢。我的一个最好的朋友在那里被枪杀。那个时候我爱上了当地Baile Funk这个乐队。我觉得从那个时候开始了我很世界性多元化融合的音乐风格。在里约,生活就是关于一堆一堆的“面粉”,女人,还有真正的音乐。22岁,正好是可以在巴西不停疯狂享乐的年纪。我们在那里有一个朋友叫Pachu,直到现在还是里约最知名的dj。如果你在里约做过dj,你一定认识Pachu。其实在Luce把Tropikillaz从圣保罗带来,我们中间的联系就是都认识Pachu。他把我介绍道那里最有名的club,Bunker 94。现在应该已经关了,但是那时这个club就在Arpoador沙滩那里,离Copacabana和Ipanema沙滩都只要两分钟时间。我和Pache住在一条街上,所以生活又是一种“感官意识“,狂欢,音乐。Baile Funk从那时候变的很火,比Diplo的第一张混音专辑Favela还要早一年。在里约要选对和什么样的来往,跳进什么样的沙丘堆里。是很真实的生活场景,就是如果你如果你没有选对圈子,有人就会因为你的鞋子打劫。但是也因为这样,我认识了一些巴西最酷的制作人,直到现在我还和他们做音乐。

Fuck. From Brazil, it was back to Canada for round 3 of university. Then I went over to Karachi Pakistan to get back into sitar. I felt I needed an escape from the substance abuse and the music.

Fuck. 从巴西回到加拿大念大三。然后从去了巴基斯坦卡拉奇市,又回到玩西塔琴的日子。因为我感觉我需要离开药物滥用和玩乐音乐的日子。

Karachi's not actually the best place for that.

但其实卡拉奇不是实现这种生活最理想的地方。

Guns are cheaper then clean water, and shit gets real very fast. On New Year's we almost got shot (like literally bullets were buzzing over our heads). But I had a cousin there, so luckily he kept us out of harm’s way. We did however rent an AK47 off some cops and blast into the ocean for a bit. But outside of the brutal violence which Karachi seems to exude, I was in a very serene setting studying sitar in a very traditional way. It put me in a good head space and adjusted my whole approach to music.

From Pakistan, I just hopped the boarder to India, where I continued my classical training for a while. I then made way down south to Goa, where I pretty much jumped right back into the shit. To this day, some of the coolest parties I've ever played were in Anjuna. Goa is mental, a psychedelic trip, fusing spirituality and club life in the most organic way. For me, it felt like home.

From India I moved to Australia, where I was living in a little hippy village outside of Bayron Bay, working in the areas only record store. I was in charge of orders, so I ended up getting into a lot of dope music. I played some dope shows around Oz for a while, but the coolest residency down there was my monthly night at Lala Land in Bayron. Just hippies and surfers, and people who wanted to dance all night. Australia's my retirement plan, man. I made sure to certify myself as high school teacher before leaving. In terms of lifestyle, those cats have it right.

离开了印度,我又去了澳大利亚。我住在Bayron海湾外的一个很嬉皮士的村庄里,在全都是唱片店的地方工作。所以我接触到了很多很棒的音乐。我在奥镇附近表演了一段时间,但是最酷的地方是每个月我都会去次Lala Land,那里只有嬉皮士和冲浪者,人们都只想一整晚跳舞。哎。澳大利亚是我“退休”的地方。在离开澳大利亚之前,我终于获得了高中老师教学资格。

Australia done! Traveled around South East Asia for about 6 months. Played the full moon party out in Koh Phan Nagn. Hung out in Korea for while playing clubs down in Hongdae. Went out to Taiwan to chill and surf for a bit. Then, on my way back to Japan, I had a 10 hour layover in Shanghai, got myself a 72 hour transit Visa, went to the original Logo (back in 2008), and never got back on the plane.

绕着东南亚旅游了6个月。在弘大附近dj。去了台湾休闲冲浪了一把。最后又回到了日本,中间在上海逗留了10小时,拿到了一个72小时的过度签证,去了最早的Logo(2008年的时候),然后就从来没再踏上下一班旅程。

2. Alright, I usually ask this closer to the end but fuck it, what is one of the craziest things you have seen among your travels?

Craziest shit. I don't know man. My cousin in Karachi once took me to some real ghetto to score some opium. The dude we were grabbing from wanted to impress us, so he took us up to his place, where it was actually scary. There were like 12 year olds with Ak’s, smoking. Under his bed was like a fuck ton of Heroine. Dude was such a G, he didn't even have a front door in his apartment, people just knew, you don't roll up on a cat like that. I've never wanted to leave somewhere so badly.

最疯狂的事吗。大概是在卡拉奇的表亲带我去了真正的贫民窟,“见识”到了真正的硬货。带我们玩的男人想要给我们留个好印象,所以带我们去了他的穴,实在是太吓人了。一些大概12岁样子的孩子拿着Ak,抽着。床下面放着惊死人多的“化学物品”。这个男的实在太G了,住的地方都不需要门,因为人们都知道,做这种生意的人不需要像躲猫猫一样。我从来没有这么迫切想要离开一个地方。

I saw some Japanese kids surfing Typhoon waves once, that was fucking astonishing.

I saw a dude get fucked up by a tiger.

I saw some kid pretty much get beat to death in Rio.

I don't know man, there's been a lot of crazy shit.

3. What was the darkest days of your travels?

3. 你旅程中最黑暗的日子是怎么样的?

To be honest, I don't think I've had any really bad experiences traveling. I traveled through Europe and North Africa for about year back in 2000. That was before 9/11, so security was lax and you could hope freight trains from country to country. I tried to get to Denmark to visit my brother, but hoped the wrong train and ended up in Amsterdam. But not like Amsterdam Central, like where-the-fuck- ghetto-ass-am-I Amsterdam. After walking like three blocks from the train station I got jacked for all my shit. They left me my guitar though, so I spent a few months sleeping on the street and singing Bob Marley tunes for cash. But even that wasn't too bad.

老实说,我不觉得自己有特别不幸的经历。2000年那个时候,9/11还没发生,我去了欧洲和北美,所以治安很松懈,做货运火车就可以在不同的国家间来往。我本意是想去丹麦找我的弟弟,但结果搭错了火车,去了阿姆斯特丹。因为不是在阿姆斯特丹市中心,我居然出现在一个超级贫民窟。从火车站连续走了三条街道,我全部家当都被一抢而空。居然给我留了一把吉他,我沦落到睡在马路上,只能卖艺赚钱,唱的是Bob Marley。收入还行。

4. When did you first start DJing, so many years has that been? How old are your crates?

4. 你第一次DJ是什么时候?你的唱片收藏到现在都跟着你多久了?

I picked up my first pair of decks, a shitty pair of Gemini's in 1994. But my brother into a lot of good music and my older cousin Shara was linked up with a lot of the old acid and techno guys like Mark EG and Chris Liberator, as well all the cats who pretty much started the Toronto scene back in the early 90's. So I was always around deejays. I was definitely one of the first kids in my high school to start deejaying. I was originally into Trance and Acid, cause that what early 90's raving was all about. I had my fair share of jungle records as well, and all the Congo Natty's. My brother was big into hip hop and reggae at the time, so he was getting me into dudes like Yami Bolo and Buju Banton. But I've always loved music, so I explored. The 90's were dope, cause you could just drop a cassette into your buddies stereo at lunch time, and record his whole Deejay set. Underground music moved quick and it was the era of the mixtape. Cassettes were gold, and they exchanged hands faster than weed. I honestly have so many tapes and records. I miss them. Some I've lost, some I know exactly where they are. But straight up, I love all music. From classical Indian or Chinese sounds, to real-ass dub (not dubstep), reggae, hip hop, rock (and its millions of sub genres), even some trap shit. There's so much music out there, and I really have spent a considerable amount of time exploring as much as I can.

5. Does your family have a musical background? What was the first instrument you picked up?

5. 你的家庭有音乐背景吗?你使用的第一个乐器是什么?

My first instrument was my guitar. My parents bought it at a garage sale when I was three. Now I've sanded off the frets, it's strung with fishing line, and it’s been everywhere with me. It’s my most prized possession. When my apartment burned down in Japan, before waking up my roommates, I put my guitar outside. When I got jacked in Amsterdam, I happily gave them my money as long as they let me keep my guitar. It It's taught more about music than anything else. I love my son, but my guitar is a very very close second.

吉他。我三岁的时候,我的父母在清仓大甩卖的时候给我买的。现在成了我最有价值的财富,我去哪儿都带着。就算是日本的房子着火的时候,我没来得及叫醒我的室友,我先把我的吉他拿了出去。我在阿姆斯特丹被抢劫的时候,只要我还有吉他,我还能靠它愉快地赚钱。吉他的地位在我生命中几乎仅次于第一位,我的儿子。

6. Your crates are full of rare tracks from projects all over the world, you can't just click the free download button on a soundcloud page for this shit. Where are you getting all this music from, straight up Merry Poppin's bag crates, never ending.

6. 你的唱片收藏集合了世界上不同的音乐,但是不可能说直接在soundcloud上直接下载。所以你是从哪里弄到这些音乐的?

Man, a lot of the stuff I've been playing recently, I get sent through a network I've been establishing over the past 5 to 7 years. When I was getting into the global stuff, I just started searching online. I ran into a few producers on soundcloud and youtube, hit them up, and started a dialog. Now it's come to a point, where I don't really have to do anything, most of these guys email there shit as soon as they finish it. But I'm always looking for new shit. Most recently I connected with this Jamaican cat, Jordan. He's actually 3rd generation Chinese, making the most futuristic dancehall. His production goes by the name of Time cow, you check out a mix I did for him right here:
