Started with a Song is the major label debut album by Canadian country music artist Brett Kissel. It was released on October 1, 2013 via Warner Music Canada.
Amanda Ash of the Edmonton Journal gave the album four stars out of five, calling it "a wham-bam collection of 10 sweeping love songs and lively party anthems that leave you glossy-eyed and daydream drunk." Ash wrote that "his songs like to play hooky with pop punches and rock growls, making for a cross-genre record that will surely befriend a very large audience.
The first single and title track is currently the most played Canadian country song at radio, and is No. 5 on the BDS Country chart this week. Brett is one of only five artists to have their debut single reach the top five on the Country chart since BDS began monitoring airplay in 1996, and the first in five years. The companion video is currently No. 3 on the CMT Top 20 Countdown.
Upon its release in June, Started With A Song made radio history. With more than 93% of Canadian Country stations adding the single, Started With A Song eclipsed the record for most adds at Country radio in one week, a record previously held by Taylor Swift.
Co-produced by Kissel with Ted Hewitt (Rodney Atkins), CCMA Award-winner Bart McKay and Ben Phillips (Blake Shelton), “Started With A Song” is an exhilarating collection of music: each song a slice of real-life sentiment; emotional touchstones that run the gamut of highs and lows and explore such subjects as deep love, trying moments and poignant reflection, measured out by party anthems and a sense that something special is happening here with Brett Kissel.
This Sunday (September 8), Brett will perform at the 2013 Canadian Country Music Association Awards from Edmonton, airing at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC, with encore airings on CMT starting at 10 p.m. ET. Kissel, who became the youngest CCMA Awards nominee in history in 2006 at age 15, will host Friday night’s CCMA Awards Legends Show.
The 23-year-old from Flat Lake, Alberta, will tour extensively throughout the rest of the year, with a slew of headlining shows across Canada, and a set of dates opening for country legend Dwight Yoakam later this month. More dates will be announced soon.
Brett Kissel – who graces the cover of the latest issue of Canadian Cowboy Country magazine – spent the early part of the summer on an extensive 25,000-km, eight-province Canadian promotional tour, visiting over 100 radio stations, retail and media outlets to introduce his debut single.
In August, Brett performed alongside artists such as Nickelback, Johnny Reid and The Sheepdogs at the Alberta Flood Benefit concert at McMahon Stadium in Calgary that raised $1.4 million for flood aid. He also helped raise over $131,000 when he joined Paul Brandt, George Canyon, Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Jim Cuddy at the Halo High Water Benefit Concert.
