回顾90年代发迹于英国Bristol的Trip-Hop音乐,当年被誉为此种取材于美国西岸黑人嘻哈的三个代表性人物,Massive Attack、Portishead以及Tricky,日后皆遇上该风潮式微而必须做出改变的命运。站在命运的交叉点上,Massive Attack四年前所带来的第五张专辑《Heligoland》,其Trip-Hop的精髓已不复见;重新复出的Portishead自2008年《Third》则再无新作推出,仅沦为European tour最叫人怀念的90经典声响之一。反观自出道便以一人姿态蒐罗各家音乐之大成于一身的Tricky,即将迈入音乐生涯的第二个十年,仍旧保持丰沛的创作能与敏锐的观察力;个人第11张大碟《Adrian Thaws》再不需要任何耸动的标题,Tricky老爹首度以本名作为唱片标题,同时也是他再次自创音乐品牌False Idols后的第二部个人作品。
《Adrian Thaws》汇集了过去20年音乐潮流的风向与缩影,首支单曲〈Nicotine Love〉找来英伦女歌手Francesca Belmonte跨刀献声,引领听者环顾20年间的Clubbing文化的重大转折。交由饶舌女歌手Bella Gotti (Nolay)演绎的〈Gangster Chronicles〉,Tricky倣效当年战友Massive Attack歌曲〈Unfinished Sympathy〉取样纽约70年代Fusion Jazz之声Mahavishnu Orchestra之经典作品〈Planetary Citizen〉。美国饶舌诗人Mykki Blanco与Francesca Belmonte共同献声的〈Lonnie Listen〉则是The Weekend、Banks等时下Dark R&B(或Post-Dubstep)的流行产物。与丹麦女歌手Oh Land合作的〈Right Here〉、与英伦电音制作人Blue Daisy合作的〈My Palestine Girl〉则是引领歌迷重回 《Maxinquaye》之Trip-Hop黄金年代的重要回响。歌曲〈Silly Games〉、〈I Had A Dream〉通过Tirzah、Francesca Belmonte等人优异的声线来驾驭爵士、雷鬼等黑人音乐,一直是Tricky老爹拿手「诡计」。
老爹自言《Adrian Thaws》几乎是他生涯最Club/Hip-Hop的代表作,也是他环顾自14岁起接触流行音乐长达30年的经验累积。

Following the creation of his own False Idols imprint and last year’s album of the same name, Tricky returns in the fall of 2014 with a new studio project that shares the name he was given at birth: Adrian Thaws. “Calling it Adrian Thaws is saying you don’t really know me,” says Tricky of his 11th album. “So many times people have tried to put a finger on me and every album I go to a different place.”
Recorded in Tricky’s home studio in London, Adrian Thaws is a musically adventurous project and collaborators on the album include Francesca Belmonte, Nneka, Mykki Blanco, Bella Gotti, Tirzah, Blue Daisy and Oh Land.
