以本名Holly Brook出道，18岁即签入Linkin Park吉他手Brad Delson自设厂牌Machine Shop Recordings旗下，就在她参与演唱的“Where'd You Go”大为成功后，顺势于2006年发行个人第一张专辑『Like Blood Like Honey』，还一手包办词曲谱写、参与制作，可惜并未获得太多注意。因为出师不利而退居幕后，直到2010年更名为Skylar Grey，代表重生的开始，她才渐渐受到各界瞩目，也认识了炙手可热的制作人Alex da Kid，并且成为Alex自创品牌KIDinaKORNER的旗下艺人。

苦熬长达7年之久，Skylar终于盼到第二张个人大碟【Don’t Look Down】问世，发行首周顺利空降告示牌流行榜第8名。这张专辑动员一线名师共同制作，除了老板Alex da Kid之外，还有痞子天王Eminem的回馈，以及曾为Maroon 5、Nicki Minaj、Cee Lo Green、Justin Bieber抬轿的幕后金手联合掌舵。首波主打“C’mon Let Me Ride”精彩取样英伦伟大摇滚团Queen的“Bicycle Race”，将Synthpop和Hip-Hop欢乐联姻；翻转电子摇滚的“Back From The Dead”，邀来Kanye West爱徒Big Sean与流行庞克团Blink-182鼓手Travis Barker合力演出；踩着深沉旋律和闇黑氛围的“Final Warning”，对施暴者不再姑息，拒绝示弱且全力反击；跳跃琴键声穿梭、带着浓烈摇滚味的“Wear Me Out”，展露Skylar嗓音的戏剧张力；美声重拍的“Shit, Man!”，特别引荐BBC「Sound Of 2013」季军的饶舌酷妹Angel Haze亮相；大获好评的“Tower (Don’t Look Down)”，荣获iTunes「当周最佳单曲」。

Don't Look Down was originally scheduled to be released in the fall of 2011, under the name Invinsible. The album's title was a portmanteau of "invisible" and "invincible", an idea that was given to her by Marilyn Manson. Grey has said that the album is to be a complete departure from any of her previous work, stating in interviews with Los Angeles Times Magazine and Rap-Up that the album's sound is "...commercial, yet avant-garde...", with "...cinematic beats and atmospheric hooks...", and "...sonically I can tell you that every song sounds different and it's really diverse, kind of going from cinematic to fun to dark. Alex and I really push each other creatively...". Most of the album was produced by Alex da Kid, and is set to might feature a guest appearance from Marilyn Manson.

In an interview with Rolling Stone during October 2012, Grey announced that Eminem is set to be the executive producer of the album. Skylar Grey and Eminem have previously collaborated on songs such as "I Need a Doctor", "Our House" and "C'mon Let Me Ride". She also said she has been working with producer J. R. Rotem.[5
