Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is by far one of the most haunting, creepy, and eerie pieces of art I've ever come across. If someone asked me to give them just one example of dark ambient music, then Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis would be the answer.
Often with dark ambient, it's easy to run into a few generic projects that aren't really bad, but don't stand out as much either. Such albums can paint a good atmosphere, but they drag on too long to the point of being tedious. This is certainly a common fault in many ambient projects. For a while I ignored Aghast because of these potential reasons, but this was farther from the truth.
Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is one of those albums that possess all the excellent qualities of dark ambient and absolutely minimizes the stereotypical negative aspects.
The reason you'd listen to something like this is usually to get in touch with the atmosphere. The atmosphere on Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is one of a kind. Have you ever been into any kind of woods very late in the night, where you're all alone and all you see is darkness and the faint colors of the trees? Or how about a deserted building in the middle of nowhere? Or a vast, barren wintry landscape? Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis provides the haunting soundtrack for these types of environments to provide such a powerful atmosphere. Sure, other albums can create these atmospheres, but not at the precision and excellence of Aghast.
The music itself is very solemn, indifferent, and distant. Most of the music is done by synths and the occasional distorted piano. Drums are used as well, but done only on one track "Totentanz" and very ritualistically. Vocals exist in most of the tracks, although I'm not sure I would call them vocals. The interesting thing to note about Aghast is the fact that only 2 females make up the band. Nacht and Nebelhexë provide something unique here - They are both female - this album would be completely different if males did the vocals. ( And on that note it would probably be pretty terrible!). The vocals range from a haunting laughter, to a lustful tone, to a tortured feel, and to very slurred out singing. These vocals are essentially just well-performed chants.
The tracks themselves speak a thousand words. In each track, there's a new mood and a different style of performance, but ultimately these tracks come together under the main theme of darkness, evil, and fear. Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is an album that pulls you in, puts you in a trance, and leaves you feeling isolated - either in fear or worshiping the darkness this album conveys, twisting your vision and perception.
My personal favorite is "Sacrifice." This track is the best representation of Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis. It starts out with very little noise - listening to it at first, you'll feel that your volume key may be broken, but eventually the synths become louder abruptly. The effect is extremely haunting and desolate. The chants later come in and carry themselves through for most of the song. There isn't much variety in here, but who needs it? "Sacrifice" is a track that accomplishes so much but with only a minimalist approach. The way it ends is very impressive, too. A slow fadeout with drowned vocals to carry the listener back into silence.
Overall, the tracks don't really have that much noise to them. As I've said earlier, the duo made these tracks with a very minimalist approach. As the listener, you know exactly what's going on, and there's no extra nonsense to distract the listener. Many tracks have lyrics, but just listening to them makes it difficult to interpret what they could be. The vocals have that faint feel that makes it feel that way.
I'm not going to discuss any other tracks in such detail, because as the listener, I don't want to spoil you from discovering this wonderful, unique atmosphere. There is nothing wrong with this album at all - it's a quintessential dark ambient masterpiece. This is not on the same level of any kind of "atmospheric black metal." Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is very different. I wish Aghast stuck together long enough to make more ambient pieces, but as it stands, Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is a legendary, albeit obscure piece of art that is essential for anyone's dark ambient collection.
I recommend you buy this album whenever you get the chance. Absorb and inhale the powerful magic of the music, and you'll surely come out feeling impressed by the work of Nachthexe and Nebelhexe.
