Figure 2 is the second released collaboration between sound artists John Hudak and Jason Lescalleet (the second one being a very limited edition 7&). This set of five pieces was recorded live inside an old church in Cambridge, MA. Both artists use ambient sounds to create slow-evolving drones. Hudak plays with sounds below the usual threshold of hearing, while Lescalleet concentrates on tape hiss, white noise, and ambient silence he records through cheap microphones and overamplifies. The resulting music is highly textural, almost processional, and feels like the analog answer to Otomo Yoshihide's late '90s-early '00s minimalist electronic projects (Filament, Cathode). Another apt comparison would be with Pierre-André Arcand's work with his recording devices &la machina riccordi& and the sound book. Somewhere between a performance of improvised electronics and a sound installation, Figure 2 develops into nice textures, but its linearity makes it difficult for the listener to remain interested throughout. The reduction of the live performance (in such a great resounding space) to CD format strips an important organic part of what the original experience must have been. Yet, the closing piece &Figure 2.05& contains some very haunting sounds. Figure 2 was released on the American label Intransitive in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies.
