专辑介绍

by Lindsay Planer

Enthusiasts have long regarded the Centurions as one of the best units to have surfaced from the onslaught of similar combos in the central and southern California surf scene. The 12 tracks on 2004's Bullwinkle, Pt. 2 feature the singular sound of Jerry Dicks (keyboards), Joe Dominic (drums), Ernie Furrow (guitar/bass), Pat Gaguebin (sax/harmonica), Jeff Lear (bass), Ken Robison (sax/flute/clarinet), and Dennis Rose (guitar/bass). One of the more obvious distinguishing factors is the full-bodied instrumentation emanating from the prominent double bass guitar leads that drive through the heart of &Comanche,& &Church Key,& &Body Surfin',& &Vesuvius,& and &Intoxica.& The latter was so distinctive that John Waters chose it for use in his 1974 indie epic debut, Pink Flamingos. That wasn't the only tune the Centurions would contribute to a motion picture, either, as the title composition to this collection was displayed in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) during the memorable heroin montage. &Surfin' at Mazatland,& &Tuff Soul,& and their spirited reading of the Sentinals' &Latin'ia& are but a few of the additional highlights. Even though the bulk of the Centurions' material consisted of covers and adaptations of familiar songs, the band did come up with several originals, including the Robison-penned ballad &Holiday Girl.& [In 2004, Collectors' Choice Music re-released Bullwinkle, Pt. 2 as part of their assessment of the vintage Del-Fi catalog.]
