在一切喧嚣繁华之外，我们的歌声陪着你经历快乐悲伤。

那天。

在过了六年之后，终于、终于决定出第二张专辑。

这六年当中当然发生了许多事；有人来来去去、维系的那些断裂又重新拼贴；歌是唱了又停、停了又唱。当然，专辑制作的过程不总是灿烂明亮，我们走过低潮、经过幽谷，制作人：家庆的身体状况，更是我们最为忧心的一环。

而作品是必须完成的，如同我们这一路从未放弃歌唱一样。

就算困顿又失落，我们仍相信那一点点的微光，相信我们对音乐的坚持，相信我们的执着会值得，相信会完成一个美丽的纪录。

今天。

你手上这张漆黑带着微光的专辑，是我们在很深很黑感觉无光的夜里，用尽心力唱给你的歌，愿你聆听时，如同我们一般，在音乐里感受到光、感受到希望。

Leave behind the hustle and bustle, and our voices will accompany you through happiness and sorrow.

That day......

We ﬁnally made the decision, after six years of contemplation, to release our second album.

So many things happened during those six years: people came and went, things fell apart and were put back together; and the singing started and stopped, and then started all over again. Of course, the process of making an album cannot always be full of brightness and light; for there are low tides and valleys, too. Our greatest concern through it all was the health of our producer, Jia-Ching.

But the work had to be completed, so we never gave up singing. Even at times when we were worn out and at an utter loss, we still believed in that spark. We believed in our commitment to the music, knowing that our persistence would bear fruit and that we’d be left with a beautiful record of all that had transpired.

Today......

The album in your hands, black and shimmering, contains songs that we sang for you with all our hearts on the deepest, darkest of nights. We hope that when you hear them, they will bring you the same light and hope they brought to us.

从1995年相遇

2004年组团、台湾比赛冠军、开始职业演唱

这中间发生太多事，几乎每年都差点散团...

所幸我这台压力制造机在2014年离团

让团得以喘息自立重获新生

没人想走窄路、进窄门（在各方面，音乐也是）

爱上爵士人声Vocal Jazz就是彻底没救（爱上阿卡/古典/音乐剧...亦是）

练得要死的和声，但掌声、收入、按赞数总是远低于其他团体

为什么要抢救爵士人声？

因为The Manhattan Transfer、Take 6、New York Voices是这世上最后3个专职演唱Vocal Jazz的团，年皆过半百...等这三团都退休后......专职Vocal Jazz团就绝迹啦！(难过不舍..)

我不敢说欧开要传承Vocal Jazz，但录这两张专辑算是向Vocal Jazz跟A Cappella致敬吧......

2012年录第一张专辑时，在加拿大送急诊，医生说是压力造成

2018年制作第二张，压力再度搞怪，我突然耳朵塞住、耳鸣变大声...看了多位医师后，遵医嘱：吃药、完全休息。

从每天录音超过12小时减至3、4小时；并依序戒除：珍珠奶茶/编曲/社交应酬/讲座/学校以外的教学活动/熬夜/油炸/辣/刺激性食物/重咸/咖啡因/甜食/宵夜/乳制品……

这也许是我最后一次制作唱片了......想当年(1995)从某音乐圈逃离，住到山上泰雅族原住民部落认识欧开家族，展开我的阿卡人生；没想到今年(2018)我将再次离开录音室/阿卡圈，继续下一段旅程......（婉拒了多次企业的赞助与投资，我的梦想 “免费原住民音乐学校” 到底何时纔能实现？）

要感谢的人太多了，我相信您们都知道我有多感激！

只能特别提出的是我最爱的家人：姊姊哥哥们，

以及越年迈、爱越显多的爸爸妈妈！

"Nobody knows the trouble I've seen…

Nobody knows but Jesus… Glory Hallelujah!"

That’s a pretty accurate reflection of my experiences with O-Kai!

We first met in 1995. In 2004 we formed the group, won a competition in Taiwan, and launched our professional singing career. In 2007, with corporate sponsorship, we became the first professional a cappella group in Taiwan. In 2012, our first album won three Golden Melody Awards. In 2017, we won an international competition. In 2018, we again found a sponsor, enabling us to release our second album. Through the years, so many things happened, and the group came close to breaking up almost every single year. Fortunately, O-Kai’s resident “pressure cooker” (that’s me), left in 2014 so that the group could take a break and renew itself.

No one wants to walk the narrow path, or enter the “narrow gate”, and that’s true in both life and music. You’re a lost cause if you fall in love with vocal jazz (and the same is also true if you fall for a cappella, classical music, or musical theater). You spend all your time and energy practicing the harmonies, but the applause, income and “Likes” will never equal those enjoyed by other kinds of musical acts.

Following in the unusual footsteps of our first album, we invited various Grammy Award winning masters to help create the musical arrangements for our second album, including:

* Mervyn Warren (a Hollywood music arranger who worked with Whitney Houston, and arranged the movie Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit)

* Mark Kibble (from Take 6)

* Michele Weir (producer and arranger for The Manhattan Transfer)

* David Maddux (producer and arranger for First Call)

* Clare Wheeler (from The Swingles)

* Darmon Meader (from New York Voices).

We were also fortunate to have our good friends Naomi Crellin (The Idea of North), Juan Garcia, and Matthias Knoche (Klangbezirk) along for the ride. Finally, we are thankful for the skillful hands of musical engineering masters Nicholas Girard, Craig Burbidge, and Bill Hare, who along with the entire team, helped push this album to the very limits of our imagination!

Why rescue vocal jazz? Right now there are only three remaining professional vocal jazz groups in the world: The Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and New York Voices. Once they retire, there won’t be any professional vocal jazz groups left. (How sad is that?!)

Far be it from me to say that O-Kai deigns to carry on the mantle of vocal jazz, but recording these two albums has certainly been our way of paying tribute to the genres of vocal jazz and a cappella.

In 2012, while recording our first album, I was sent to the emergency room; the doctor said my condition was caused by stress. In 2018, while producing this second album, the stress acted up yet again. My ears blocked up and I suffered from tinnitus. After several trips to the doctor, I was prescribed medication and complete bed rest.

The recording time was cut from more than 12 hours a day down to just three or four hours. I was also ordered to abstain from: drinking bubble tea; arranging music; attending social engagements; giving speeches; teaching courses (apart from my regular duties); staying up late; eating fried, spicy, salty, or other foods that cause irritation; and consuming caffeine, sweets, late night meals and dairy products.

This could very well be the last time I produce an album.

Back in 1995, I wanted to get away from the music circle that I was in, so I went to live in the mountains with the Atayal aboriginal tribe, where I met the O-Kai family and started my a cappella life. I couldn’t have imagined that in 2018, I’d be leaving the studio and the a cappella world to embark on my next journey. (I politely declined several sponsorships and investment opportunities from corporations. Who knows when I’ll finally be able to realize my dream of establishing a free aboriginal music school?)

There are too many people I want to thank, but I believe you all know how grateful I am. I should mention, however, my beloved family: my brothers and sisters, and my mother and father, who have only become more loving with each passing year.

I would like to dedicate this album to my parents, my family, O-Kai, my inimitable aboriginal friends, the teachers who have looked after me, and all my relatives, classmates, students and supporters.

And of course, I must dedicate this album to the one who understands the most what true love is and how to practice it: Jesus Christ (J. C.).
