Released in 1968, In Motion is a typical album for soul-jazz organist and pianist Earl Grant, placing the keyboardist in front of either a small combo (eight tracks) or a Creed Taylor-style orchestra (three tracks, including a choral version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love"), with a song list taken largely from the pop hits of the day. The Burt Bacharach and Hal David songbook is raided three times, most effectively for a slinky organ version of "The Look of Love." Less effective are versions of Roger Miller's "King of the Road" and Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe," country-pop tunes that don't take well to Charles Bud Dant's ultra-slick middle-of-the-road production. Better are the two originals, the title track, a rollicking reworking of the standard "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," and the bossa nova-tinged ballad "Green Eyes." Earl Grant's albums, particularly late in his career, were notoriously uneven, but overall, In Motion does a fair job of staying to the good.
