Review

erry Miller has been standing in the shadows for some time now, a highly sought after sideman backing musicians such as The Spurs and Eilen Jewell (with and without the Sacred Shakers), among many others. The all-knowing internet seems to have a hard time differentiating between him and the Jerry Miller who was one of the original members of seminal psychedelic band Moby Grape. But the new road under the un-Moby Jerry Millers wheels just might bring him out of the gloaming and into the spotlight.

Its easy to see why so many musicians want Miller backing them when you hear his blistering guitar picking on instrumental tracks like Round Em Up and Travis Express. His style is a combination of rockabilly, western swing, early 60s pop like The Ventures and something uniquely Miller. Hard to classify, but impossible not to keep time with.

And fear not, lyrics lovers, this album is not all instrumental. Miller calls in some talented help on the vocals on several tracks - almost all of them genuine country classics - including the aforementioned Jewell on the Billie Holiday standard What a Little Moonlight Can Do, which brings home why it is that certain songs become standards, as well as some other singers who may not be as well known but should be. Roy Sludge will make you forget all the other versions of the classic Detour (AKA Detour (Theres A Muddy Road Ahead)), and thats saying something since its been recorded by everybody from Ella Fitzgerald to Bill Haley and the Comets. Eric Royer revitalizes the Grandpa Jones chestnut Eight More Miles to Louisville.

If nothing else this record should guarantee that our Jerry Miller will never have to answer the riddle Whats big and purple and lives in the ocean? --Country Standard TIme

Product Description

Fifteen years ago I stumbled into the Midway Café in Boston, MA to catch a honky-tonk set by a band called the Spurs. I can honestly say that my life was forever changed that night. I loved everything about the band, but what stuck out most was the incredible dexterity and creativity of guitarist Jerry Miller. That was the day I became a Jerry Miller fan. In the years that followed I made every attempt to catch his shows with the Spurs, The Coachmen, Jack Smith & the Rockabilly Planet, Eilen Jewell, the Sacred Shakers, and any of his many other musical projects. A number of years later I even had the opportunity to record and gig with the man myself and the sonic fireworks shot off from Jerry s Gretsch never ceased to amaze me.

For many years Jerry s fans the world over, including myself, have been eagerly anticipating a solo record one that might show off his incredible rockabilly chops, his western swing sensibilities, his twangy surf-rock sounds, and everything that goes into Jerry s inimitable style. Now at last that record is here and it truly exceeds my loftiest of expectations. The band is superb and Jerry receives some stellar vocal support from long-time collaborators Eilen Jewell, Eric Royer, Roy Sludge, and Miss Tess, but it is Jerry s original instrumentals, his slick pedal steel playing, and blistering guitar solos that shine on this record. I can t say enough good things about these tracks. For those of you who have never heard Jerry s music, it is my great honor to introduce you to one of the greatest guitarists you ll ever hear, the one and only Jerry Miller!
