Much like X Factor winner's singles and Doctor Who specials, repackaged albums and skilfully crafted John Lewis adverts with a classy cover song have become Christmastime staples in recent years. For the 2012 season, the latter two come in the form of Paloma Faith, who has recorded her own take on the INXS 1987 classic for the department store's latest campaign and slapped it on an updated disc of her recent album Fall To Grace.
It's a brave task to reinterpret a much-loved hit, but Faith's soulful tones immediately thwart any doubts that she can't do the song justice. "I was standing/ You were there/ Two worlds collided/ And they could never tear us apart," she declares over bluesy strings and hollered beats more heart-warming than a festive onesie. It was always going to be a tough feat topping the original, but Faith proves her worth as a British talent by coming admirably close.
