Romantic Jazz Vocal is one of ten bargain-priced albums from the Dutch label Disky's The Jazz Collection and one of the three theme CDs featuring jazz vocals. Like the other two albums, there are 20 selections of standards and traditional pop, performed by top vocalists and vocal groups of the last 50-plus years, some of who continue to be active. Most of these tracks are from albums released in the 1950s and all are romantic ballads. One of many attractions extended by this CD is that the performances are among the best the individual artists have to offer. On this disc, there's June Christy with Stan Kenton's piano on their 1955 Duets album doing "Angel Eyes" along with Annie Ross and Gerry Mulligan on a couple of tracks with songs by Ellington and Porter. The undervalued Sue Raney chips in with her lovely version of "Here's That Rainy Day" and Lou Rawls contributes a bouncy, saucy "Autumn Leaves." Pop star and rat pack member Dean Martin croons "Just in Time" while Bobby Darin takes on "Charade." The rest of the cuts are similarly well performed. Given some of those present on the CD, like Martin, Dinah Shore, and Matt Dennis, the use of the term "jazz" is perhaps a stretch. At the same time, the jazz credentials of Sarah Vaughan are unquestioned. Whatever, the vocal artistry on this is excellent and given that level of quality, whether "jazz" is the correct designator falls into the category of quibbling.
