The &Licht und Blindheit& single is legendary!
Clearly it's difficult for most reviewers to put this release in perspective. The song &Atmosphere& is Ian Curtis' most bare and honest performance, Martin Hannett's revelation as a producer of pop, and was hugely influential on the genre of new wave in terms of mood and tone.
The lyrics, to me, is about the human condition from the perspective of a handicapped person. &People like you, find it easy, ... walking on air&.
The band discussed feeling a little uncomfortable making such a fluffy, keyboard laden song, but the song was made for Ian Curtis. He is 100% committed and no one else could have sung it as well as him at that time.
Martin Hannett rises solidifies his legendary producer status with this song by employing the synthesizers, chimes, and tambourine, a nod to Phil Spector and pop music of yore, something New Order would repeat when it was in vogue, but was only done by Joy Division in this one song.
&The Cure& must have used the same chime effect 1000 times, and it the whole chimes, bells, and synth sound was one of the cornerstones of New Wave. &Atmosphere& is an immensely influential track.
While the world of commercial music was quick to profit off of the techniques exhibited in &Atmosphere&, Joy Division somehow put it on a limited edition french single.
And of course, &Dead Souls&, the opener to so many gigs, is an epic rock song. It's the perfect B side to a legendary single.
