Polygram dips into its vast jazz holdings at Verve, Mercury, and EmArcy to compile another fetching edition of its Jazz Club series. This time out, the perennial symbol of the music is addressed: the tenor saxophonist. And from swing and bop stylings to the many '60s manifestation of hard bop, the 14 cuts here provide a veritable history lesson on wax for neophytes. Including such cornerstone figures as Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, and Lester Young, the disc especially spotlights the young players who took the horn out of the fire that was bebop, stretched things out with a good amount of blues phrasing, and created a wellspring of hard bop fare in the late '50s and '60s. Some of the most notable of those players heard here include Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, and Hank Mobley. And that's not to forget one of the all time great ballad players, Gene Ammons. For lovers of the tenor saxophone, this is a fine way to get more familiar with the titans of the club.
