Though well executed, finely produced, and filled with spirited performances, Clear is a record that does nothing to distinguish the Color Red from any other alternative hard rock band circa 2002. With barely a melody or major chord to be found, none of the tracks could be considered remotely memorable. "Sore Throat," the album's single, wouldn't have been considered a choice cut in an era when songwriters were required to pen hooks instead of riffs. With ethereal arpeggios that dissolve into pedal tones, the opening verses of "Wrong Replacement" actually resonate with substance, but by the time the chorus kicks in, it's back to paint-by-numbers pathos. Clear says more about the creatively depressed state of modern rock than the band responsible for this dull outing.
