The song was written by Rihanna and Valda Nobles and produced by Vada Nobles, Carl Sturken, and Evan Rogers for her debut album, Music of the Sun. It peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first top five single. It also peaked at number-one in New Zealand, number two in the United Kingdom and at number six and number seven in Australia and Canada, respectively. The beat for "Pon de Replay" was also used in Natasja Saad's hit "Mon De Reggae."
