专辑介绍

by Skip Jansen

Following on from the '97 debut Tsugaru, this is the Japanese underground supergroup's second album. Made up of mystical avant-garde guitar legend Keiji Haino self-defined "Japanese Blues" vocalist Kan Mikami and drummer Ishitsuka Toshi the power behind psychedelic group Cinorama. Those familiar with the former two can be pretty sure that this is not going to be a light weight affair, as the duo are responsible for consistently creating some of the most challenging music to come out of the Japanese avant-garde scene of the '80s and '90s. Kan Mikami's stream-of-conscious vocal delivery and Keiji Haino's signature static wall-of noise guitar make perfect partners in a mesh within which Ishitsuka Toshi can divert with explosive stabs. Opting for a live in the studio recording, the trio holds nothing back in their free improvisation. Such a term may lead one to belive that Ring is yet another ad-hoc session of avant-garde motifs and post-free jazz explorations -- which could not be further from the truth. What we have here is the trio collectively inventing one sound with all the intensity and speed of the improviser though favoring the heavier and darker aspects of rock. While Ring is as abstract and unworldly as anything Vajra's member have produced in their solo careers and primary groups -- Haino's Fushitsusha could be the only comparison to Vajra -- it is an entirely organic music that is undeniably soulful, mystical, and genuinely fearful in it's intensity.
