Shockabilly's second studio full-length is a mix of '60s-inspired folk-rock, demented psychedelia, and lo-fi studio trickery that points the way toward the roughly similar, but more successful albums Vietnam and Heaven. The songs are all over the map, ranging from protest songs (the self-mockingly rendered "Our Daily Lead" and the over-earnest "National Bummer") to murky bad-acid flashbacks ("You Dungeon My Brain"). Guitarist/singer Eugene Chadboure contributes a surprisingly straightforward and sincere-sounding folk ballad, the wordplay-filled "Hattiesburg, Miss." Still, the highlights are the three over-the-top cover songs: an anthemic double-time version of Simon & Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound," a hilarious dismantling of Roger Miller's "Dang Me," and a noisy, truly psychedelic version of the Byrds' Eight Miles High." These tracks alone make the album worth hearing (even if the latter two songs are also done on Live...Just Beautiful), but they also make it clear what the rest of the tracks are missing, which is better songwriting. [Note: Colosseum has been paired with the earlier LP Earth Vs. Shockabilly on the two-fer CD Ghost of Shockabilly.]
