专辑介绍

by Stephen Cook

This follow-up to LaSalle's breakthrough album, Trapped By a Thing Called Love, carries on with another solid round of southern-fried blues and soul. Atop arranger Bowlegs Miller's groove-centric charts, LaSalle particularly shines on her own &Man Size Job,& Bill Withers' &Lean on Me,& and the Civil Rights anthem &There Ain't Enough Hate Around (To Make Me Turn Around).& Mostly, though, LaSalle evokes early influences like Ruth Brown and such contemporaries as Millie Jackson and Betty Wright while plying her gospel-infused, blues-grit way through fine cheatin' songs like &Breaking up Somebody's Home& and &Your Man & Your Best Friend.& But, lest one thinks it's all about co-dependency and dissipation, she rebounds on the album closer, &I'm Over You,& confidently stepping out on her own amidst a stunning backdrop of funky smooth strings. With a whole lot of blues and soul -- plus a dash of country for good measure -- LaSalle delivers a gem from her early-'70s stay at the Westbound label.
