You can't blame a guy for trying, excpet when he tries way too hard, as Sepe does here while attempting to show his mastery of all forms of music, from high to low, and therein lies the problem. In another context, the juxtapositions of medieval vocal music, jazz, Scandinavian folk songs, Italian-language raggamuffin reggae, and much, much, too much more would be fun. But not only is Sepe serious about making a grand statement of the avant-garde from this mess, but he also does so by drawing insultingly distinct lines of demarcation between the genres as if to make sure we get the tired point that disposible pop and enduring classics are all grist for the marketplace. Thus, the classical material swims in somber kitsch, the post-modern pop thrashes limbs in wild abandon, while Sepe's jazz hobbyhorse stakes out reverential interludes in the middle of the mess. Ultimately it's all just depressingly vulgar.
