After only three releases on his Minimise label, Dublin producer Donnacha Costello was asked by the mighty Force Inc label to record an album for them; the majestic sounds of Growing Up in Public resulted in a truly minimal work utilizing the aesthetics of dub techno yet employed with so much ambience and such a sparse feel that it instantly makes Costello one to watch. After two or three tracks, a similarity to Pole begins to shape, as the dub basslines get characterized by tweaked synth stabs and quiet crackling. It's a potent formula that isn't so innovative circa 2000, yet Costello's touch brings such an elegance to the music that one begins to question how the producer can incite such warm feeling with such minimal sound. Besides Costello's talents, this album also illustrates exactly how keen Force Inc has become at the end of the century, continually discovering talents far away from their home base in Frankfurt, Germany.
