A new album from Zion Train is always cause for celebration, especially when it focuses on reggae and dub and touches more lightly on other worldbeat sounds. Live As One is a strictly reggae project, with guest appearances from such A-list singers and chatters as Tippa Irie and Earl 16, as well as lesser-known vocalists Lua, Marlene Johnson, Dubdadda, Raiz, and YT. Although it stays well within the reggae boundaries, Live As One features a startling variety of sounds -- some gentle instrumental dub (&Audrey and June&), some jittery rockers grooves (&Life That I Choose&, the borderline jungly &Baby Father& (the lyrics to which focus refreshingly on paternal responsibility instead of the usual reggae theme of female treachery), funky reggae-hip-hop (&What a Situation&), and dubwise roots reggae (the lovely &Why&, featuring singer Marlene Johnson). Earl 16 makes his appearance on the horticultural anthem &Give Me Good Sensi&, and &Animus Mundi& features what may be the first-ever use of a Franklin Delano Roosevelt sample for rhythmic purposes. And as usual for a Zion Train release, the liner notes include a bewildering assortment of political and environmental messages, along with a whimsical assortment of bizarre news stories. Highly recommended.
