专辑介绍

by Andy Kellman

You can't really fault Liliput for a decline on Some Songs, because it's always tricky to follow up a great record with something just as wonderful or near it in quality. It is a minor disappointment, though, because some of the nine tunes stitched together here are almost as innocuous and seemingly tossed-off as the album's title. They had long since established themselves as a top tier band, so that adds to the letdown factor. The trio featured on the debut returns, aided by a crew of pals on percussion, sax, and piano. Beat Schlatter (great name) reprises his role from an earlier incarnation of the group, providing, of course, drums. For the majority of the record, the gang works through material that sounds little more than half-realized. The seeds of good songs only show signs of sprouting on "Ring-A-Ding-Dong," "Terrified," and "A Silver Key Can Open an Iron Lock Somewhere," which never quite gets off the ground. "His Head All Read" positively echoes Young Marble Giants with its spare structure of tapping kick drum, rave-up guitar, and busy bass, but the vocals detract and sound patched on. It's missing the playful giddiness of the debut, but most importantly it's also missing the fun rhythms and carefree vocals. Nothing really breaks free from the mid-tempo tedium, which makes it far less engaging than the preceding LP and singles. The weaknesses of Some Songs are further magnified when listened to as part of the Liliput compilation, because much of it is eclipsed by the outtakes and unreleased material that preceded it. The first album undeniably dwarfs it. Maybe they were taking themselves too seriously, which is usually a problem. It quite possibly was a pitfall here.
