by François Couture A live performance can put a computer artist in an awkward position: rely on your released material and people will say you are just feeding pre-recorded tracks to the speakers; work in real time from scratch and they might find your music lacking the richness or depth they expect from you. Pimmon's contribution to Staalplaat's Mort aux Vaches series falls in the latter category, even though it also draws from the first. It may sound silly, but compared to his studio albums, this performance lacks spontaneity. He seems slow to react. The music, a generally engrossing mix of rhythm-less polished digital noises and synthetic swooshes, crawls around, lacking the vivacity that usually makes Pimmon's music memorable (witness his CD Snaps Crackles Pops , recorded at around the same time as this radio session from October 2002). Plus, this performance contains its share of flaws, ranging from sudden sound glitches that are obviously unintentional to failed segues between tracks -- the transition between "New Matin" and "Sugar in the Marmalade" is particularly rough, a shame since this segment could have been the album's highlight. The album does have its good moments (the revisited "Any Atom of Fear," the aforementioned "New Matin" minus its finale) and represents an interesting, albeit not essential addition to Pimmon's discography. But compared to Greg Davis ' wonderfully easygoing Mort aux Vaches set released a few months earlier, one cannot help but be slightly disappointed by this bumpy ride.
