【PhantomMullet】Bethlehem are quite an interesting group. Their legendary debut of Dark Metal helped give birth to a new subgenre of an interesting type of doom metal with black elements (considered to be "dark metal"). While their next release may have been a bit too much, Sardonischer Untergang im Zeichen irreligiöser Darbietung (SUIZID) proved to be something else. What we have here is an album like no other: SUIZID puts a new spin the meanings of darkness and depression. This is neither like Dictius... nor Dark Metal The most obvious change in this release is the new vocalist, Deinonychus' Marco Kehren, who does an excellent job. There aren't too many vocalists like him, and his style in SUIZID is pretty different from his work in his main project. While Landfermann sounded like a psychotic murderer, Kehren does an excellent job at making himself sound like depressed, suicidal, disturbed person. His range is also notable - from tortured, 'sad' growling (most notably found in "Teufelverrückt Gottdreizehn"), to nefarious grunts, to distorted speaking, and even a bit of chanting. Bethlehem also, for the first time, bring in a female vocalist, Cathrin Campen. She doesn't have too many parts, which mostly consist of spoken words, whispers, and cries, but she really adds to the atmosphere and chaos. A lot of people believe that female vocals are cheesey, but they are indeed executed well in SUIZID. As far as the other instruments go, there are really no flaws. The production is excellent - I can't think of anyway they could have improved it. Every instrument and effect is heard clearly. The riffs are hard to describe, as something different can be said about each track. At some points the guitars, bass, and drums have a bone crushing feel, but other times the lead guitar separates its self from the intensity and creates an elegant, melodic part. A good example is Nexus as well as 'Du sollst dich toten'. We experience thundering drums and bass accompanied by a very melodic guitar tone. Random effects and keyboards are used briefly within a few songs to add to the atmosphere, once again. Check out the middle of Luftstehs'Ibläh, that's definitely a notable piece that does well with keys and effects. Although I'm pretty sure I've heard that synth tune done by many other black metal bands ;-]. And if you keep listening to the song, you hear some really demented sounding screeching vocals that Landfermann wishes he could do. The lyrics are a bit out there, especially if you don't speak German. In my opinion, the foreign language really adds to the obscurity and dreariness of the album like no other. But even if you do, you'll see a couple of the songs have some pretty weird titles. For example, Luftstehs'Ibläh has something to do with farts, and the track after is about vomitting? Of course, there are some pretty straight forward lyrical themes in SUIZID. 'Du sollst dich toten' and "Gestern starb ich schon heute", like other tracks, are about death and suicide. Regardless, you have to give these guys credit for not having generic lyrics and at the same time not making a joke about themselves. This is one of the characteristics of Bethlehem that make them so great. If you want a desolate, eerie piece of depressing metal that is not in vein of Xasthur, Norrt, and various other generic suicidal black metal bands and funeral doom bands, then SUIZID might be right for you. This is certainly an album you listen to on a rainy day, where the sun won't come out, you're trapped indoors, it's dark inside, and you're all alone sitting in bleakness. If you enjoyed Bethlehem's first 2 full-lengths, by all means give SUIZID a try as well. You won't be disappointed. It's not a difficult album to find at any rate. Highlights: Nexus, Luftstehs'Ibläh, and Teufelverrückt Gottdreizehn, but all the tracks have something to order, and 2 years after I've purchased this album, I can say none of them ever get too tiresome.
