“Schubert's Great C major Symphony was a work close to Boult's heart. He recorded it for the first time in 1934, for the last in 1972, and in between came countless performances. This one was at rather a noisy Prom in 1969, when he returned to the BBC SO from which, he had been severed by the mercilessness of BBC bureaucracy.
Among much else, he was a supreme master of the orchestra, attentive to his players without ever losing sight of a work's architecture.
In this performance there's his absolute security of tempo, which doesn't mean stiffness.
The finale is steady without inflexibility; the scherzo drives along brightly; and the Andante moves inexorably towards its terrifying climax, with a movingly sad cello aftermath. This is vintage Boult. So, in their own ways, are the two overtures.”
