Faithful Darkness were formed by guitarist Jimmy “Judas” Persson following his departure form Soilwork in 1998, but it’s their first album without Persson that sees the band competing on the same level as the melodeath big-guns. Archgod is a wonderfully modern melodic death metal album that should go a long way toward putting Faithful Darkness on the map.
The band’s third outing sees them adding a hefty dose of thrash and metalcore to their sound, with stellar results. Archgod’s first track, “Lies Tell The Truth,” starts off sounding surprisingly similar to Fear Factory’s “Demanufacture,” to the point where you fully expect Burton C. Bell to start crooning (“Desensitized by the value of life…”) at any moment, when it suddenly takes a sharp turn into Arch Enemy territory before continuing in a fashion more akin to modern-day Dark Tranquillity (plus a riff that is strikingly similar to System Of A Down’s “Ariels” at one point); and that suitable yet intriguing mix of influences paints a fairly comprehensive picture of what Archgod has in store.
Besides the heavier direction, there’s an increased and more effective keyboard presence this time around, as well as a blackened tone to some of the proceedings. “Snake And Muse” trades-off between its Dimmu Borgir-esque verse and modern In Flames-leaning clean chorus, while “The Witness” blends the former with a renewed Arch Enemy-style anthemic melodicism. Some of the riffs might have too much of a –core vibe for some purists, and those who feel Dark Tranquillity sold out with Damage Done (they didn’t) need not apply, but the added heaviness, direction and electronic flare is largely what distinguishes Archgod from Faithful Darkness’s earlier, more floundering output.
At times, fresh-faced guitarist, Jonathan Thorpenberg’s clean vocals can be a bit off, but the huge step-up in quality shown by Archgod is highly suggestive that his was the missing element whose addition sees Faithful Darkness graduate from mere curiosity to full-blown recommendation. This is one of the better melodic death metal releases in a year that has seen the genre in full bloom.
Especially recommended to fans of:
