The 99 Essentials series brings some excellent music in value-priced MP3 downloads. I have purchased several of the collections, but not this one. Judging from the others, I expect the performances here to be very solid, and the recording quality to be first-rate. Classical music purists will notice that this collection has a lot of excerpts from larger works. Nevertheless, this "greatest hits" collection of classical music covers a lot of ground in the hours upon hours of music presented here. I'm a musician, and would probably be one of those purists that would prefer to hear complete works. That said, I remember from years ago when I was first introduced to classical music through my grandfather's extensive record collection. I would rarely play entire records, instead hopping from one favorite passage to another to create my own collection of greatest hits. This proved to be very enjoyable, and sparked the interest I have today in the great composers.
The selections here are an excellent survey of music spanning several centuries, including large and small works, solos, orchestras, choral music, and much more. This would be great as a place to start in learning about classical music, or for occasional listening. Very much recommended. Also in the series, the 99 Essentials collections for Debussy, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi and Chopin include complete works, and are all oustandingly excellent.
