Earlier this year, Mavis Staples worked with Jeff Tweedy to release the final recordings of her late father Pops Staples. Now, she's back with another record of her own. The four-song EP Your Good Fortune is out April 21 via Anti-.
The EP was produced by Son Little, who wrote two of the tracks specifically for Staples ("Your Good Fortune" and "Fight"). The other two tracks are songs she's covered before: Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and the gospel song "Wish I Had Answered", which the Staple Singers have performed.
Staples said in a statement, "I’m always excited to do new songs and this young man wrote two just for me. Seemed like we were a team made in heaven. He writes from his heart; he's a great singer who sings from his heart, and he reached my heart. I'm so glad we got to work together.”
Staples is also the subject of the new ary film Mavis!, which premiered at SXSW.
