This 1990 concert recording by a group of younger, academically trained musicians representing all the major instruments of the Korean canon, presents examples of both the highly formal courtly and aristocratic instrumental styles and the more emotional idioms rooted in folk music. The most striking cut of all is the last, a 14-minute improvisation in the rurally-based sinawi style. This is not one for the like-wow-man school of worldbeat fan, but it's noble stuff and well worth the effort of getting your ear in gear for it. (68:00) ~ John Storm Roberts
