Afta-1 burst onto the scene with his magnificent debut Aftathoughts Vol. 1, quickly announcing himself as the new producer to watch. But then something else happened - the beat maestro revealed himself to be a movement. The beauty of Afta-1 is that he delivers a cohesive unified message that is conveyed through his music, his artwork, his live performances, his personal style and his choice of collaborators and marketing methods. With the Love Is Real series of mixtapes and well received remixes of artists like Esthero, Little Dragon and Jessie Boykins, Afta-1 has seen his profile steadiliy on the rise. Now with the perfectly timed FORM, his second LP, Afta-1 hopes to build on his fanbase and his LOVE movement. Available as both a digital download and as a limited edition cassette tape, Afta-1 seems to be on the right track merging his art and his music into a tactile form. The album itself is nothing less than what we have all expected: another gorgeous foray into the brain of Afta-1.
FORM begins with abstract and experimental sounds in its first two tracks before moving seamlessly into what is considered the signature Afta-1 sound, an uplifting hybrid of electronic hip-hop beats and electronica that drips with spiritual undertones. Full of chattering percussion, world instruments, and cracking drum beats, the album moves swiftly from track to track, transitioning like flowing water through each movement. Tracks like "Become Still", "Rain", and "Por Detras" bump with heavy bass and snappy snares. The entire middle section of the album plays like a DJ set, aimed at moving butts to the floor. During the final tracks, Afta-1 delivers some of his finest work, using beats to tell complicated nuanced stories. On the lengthy "The Time Inbetween Suite" the beats and tempos are switched up so many times it feels like five different songs. And the luxurious "Amor Es" (previously heard with Jessie Boykins' vocals on top) is a truly dramatic closer that retains it's soulful vibe minus any vocals.
Much like Flying Lotus, Afta-1 uses beats to create a unique energy that has found a considerable following. Both seem to be influenced by soul, world, and jazz, but where Lotus seems to move towards harder sounds, Afta-1 creates a more melodic soundscape. The results are no less startling or mesmerizing. With his second album the genius of Afta-1 is truly starting to take form.
