The accordion is often thought of in jazz as either a joke or a novelty, but there have been a limited number of talented practitioners including, in recent times, Richard Galliano. This best-of collection draws its material from a 16-year period, featuring Galliano on 15 selections, ten of which are his originals. The music ranges from straight-ahead and tangos to mood music and folkish songs. Guitarist Bireli Lagrene and Toots Thielemans on harmonica are among the most prominent sidemen, but Galliano's surprisingly versatile accordion is the main star. This set serves as an excellent introduction to Richard Galliano's music and sound.
