Ashit Desai is one of India's greatest musical treasures. His singing, composing, arranging, and production work for stage, screen, television, and concert hall -- due to his close association with Ravi Shankar -- have earned him the top cultural honors in his country. (Americans may remember Desai's voice singing the devotional songs from the film Gandhi.) This project is a series of devotionals, composed and arranged by Desai, that are based on traditional ragas. The ten selections create a lush musical journey through the life of a soul as it awakens and moves toward bliss. Titles reflect these states -- "Awakening," "Enlightenment," "Homage," "Serenity," "Elation," "Devotion," etc. In each case, Desai employs an amalgam of traditional Indian instruments such as tablas, sarod, sitar, and pakhawaj with Spanish guitar, vibraphones, electronic keyboards, bass, and harp. The resulting music is something akin to truly beautiful Indian music and new age fare. It skirts the edges of both without becoming either.
