The debut album from this charming young trio of Newfoundland sisters mixes modern folk songs with traditional material and several original songs by Maureen Ennis, who plays rhythm guitar and generally sings lead. The girls' voices are crystalline and beautiful, and their blend is almost perfect (though it's a bit ragged on their arrangement of "If Anything Happened to You"). Perhaps most importantly, they make very good song choices: Eric Bogle's "Somewhere in America" gets a lovely arrangement, as does the traditional title track and the classic "Leaving of Liverpool." Their rendition of "An Irish Lullaby" is surprisingly fresh. The production is maybe just a touch on the glossy side, and throughout the album keyboards, drums, and the occasional electric guitar hint at the more modern sound that would come with later recordings, but for now the Ennis Sisters are treading gracefully the line between pop and folk music. Recommended.
