The Behind the Mirror 12" received a fraction of the attention given to the 12" released around the same time on Richie Hawtin's Minus. Quality-wise, the two releases are practically equals. Released on M.I.A. and Falko Brocksieper's Berlin-based Sub Static label, these two tracks only reinforce the producer's reputation -- even though neither one can be considered on the level of "Typerope," "Freedom Engine," or "She Is He." "Behind the Mirror"'s synthetic tendrils merely tap their tails on the watertight bass drums; it's another one of Mathew Jonson's swift, bumping concoctions. "Folding Space" is, fittingly enough, spacier -- but it also incorporates a synth melody that could've been copied from a disco hit. If one were to compile eight or nine of Jonson's best tracks to this point, the result would be just as significant as Luomo's Vocal City or Metro Area's self-titled album. It just so happens that Jonson bridges the two sectors of dance from which those albums come from -- steely microhouse and bouncy left-field house.
