Rudolf Kempe is one of several mid-20th century conductors who, though overshadowed by Herbert von Karajan, forged long-standing relationships with European orchestras and opera houses and produced some immeasurably fine performances and recordings. Kempe's work deserves wider recognition, and here BBC Legends contributes a pair of Mahler recordings that supplement the conductor's only commercial recording of the composer ('Kindertotenlieder' with Fischer-Dieskau).
The 1965 First Symphony has some fine playing in the first and last movements, but is somewhat weaker in the inner movements. The 'Resurrection,' however, is the main attraction. The Second Symphony is a 1972 Proms performance which eschews flashy excesses in favor of an interpretation which highlights the structural logic of the work. The orchestra of which Kempe was music director during his final decade follows him admirably, fleshing out his reading of the work with playing both crisp and lyrical. There can be little doubt as to why this was a highlight of the season!
