While it's a shame that Bruce Broughton's name sets off so few bells of recognition outside of the hardcore soundtrack cognoscenti, the average filmgoer who is familiar with his music probably recalls his splendid work on the modern Western classic Silverado. Broughton's score for the 2002 telefilm Mark Twain's "Roughing It" returns the composer to the Western genre and the results are once again vividly etched. His rustic Americana melodies bring to life a bygone era without falling prey to the clichés and shorthand that plague so many period soundtracks, its simple, appealingly rough-edged themes instead channeling the traditions of Aaron Copland and other early masters with authenticity and authority. Intrada's release is typically top-notch, assembling the 75-minute score in its entirety as well as insightful liner notes and myriad color stills.
