Shawn Mullins plays his hometown, Atlanta, GA, in this show performed prior to the release of his 2008 album Honeydew. (A photograph in the slide show that is one of the extras on the DVD suggests the date was November 24, 2007.) He previews several songs from that album, both in the six-song solo set that starts things off and in the nine-song band set that follows. The new songs fit in well with old favorites, since they are more story-songs told from the songwriter's wry point of view and sung in his resonant, soft-spoken tenor. Mullins, dressed in T-shirt, flannel shirt, and jeans (he adds a sailor's cap for the band set), exudes a warm, comfortable feeling that allows him to take on politics in the new "For America" (not, he insists in an interview in the extras, an "antiwar song," but certainly not a pro-war one, either) and the opposite sex in "Beautiful Wreck" (also presented in a music video). Mullins may have only scored one real hit, "Lullaby" (he laments in the interview that he probably should have called it "Rock-A-Bye," a repeated word from the chorus, since nobody ever knows what the name of the song is), but he has many catchy songs, and the highlights of his career are present on this winning performance. [The audio CD version has one more track than the DVD, "Santa Fe," and is sequenced differently.]
