The excellent ragtime and classic jazz pianist Sue Keller emphasizes the blues on this CD. The 16 selections are taken more or less in chronological order dating from 1912's &Dallas Blues& to James P. Johnson's 1927 romp &Snowy Morning Blues.& Keller sings on all but three songs, displaying a forceful and expressive voice. However, it is her piano playing that is of greatest interest, for she is quite fluent, strides hard, and is often quite powerful; her boogie bass is memorable. Not all of the songs are technically blues (certainly not Zez Confrey's &Kitten on the Keys&), although most are, and Keller's treatment of the material is consistently bluesy. Fans of vintage jazz piano styles and spirited blues singing will enjoy this set.
