Frode Gjerstad performs exclusively on alto saxophone for this engaging set of free jazz pieces. Joined in the front line by trumpeter Bobby Bradford, and backed by bassist Wilbur Morris and drummer Newman Baker, there is a continual sense of wonder as the musicians create extemporaneously. Gjerstad sounds eerily at times like early Ornette Coleman, but he has clearly absorbed a later aesthetic as well. Totally in command, the saxophonist fits perfectly with Bradford, with whom he has performed before. Bradford is totally convincing, his unique slurps and fat tone adding color and charm. Wilbur Morris' bass is an unusual treat, and Baker more than holds his own, but the sound of the piano is missed. Nonetheless, there is much to savor, and the generous recording time (found on all CIMP releases) and solo space highly recommend this splendid effort.
